What is Gold Filled?
Gold filled jewelry is made by bonding a solid layer of 12K or 14K gold to a base metal like brass/copper. By law, gold must make up at least 5% (1/20th) of the total weight. It’s about 100 times thicker than gold plating making it highly tarnish resistant and safe for sensitive skin. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. Gently clean with soapy water and a toothbrush. When not wearing, store in a dry, sealed container (or resealable baggie) to avoid tarnish.
Why we love it:
What is Sterling Silver?
Sterling silver is made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% alloy (usually copper or zinc). It’s naturally hypoallergenic and can tarnish over time but easily cleaned and restored with a polishing cloth. Store in a dry, sealed container/baggie to minimize oxidation. Wearing your silver jewelry often prevents tarnish as well!

What is Solid Gold?
Solid gold is the highest quality form of gold used in jewelry. Solid gold is a precious metal alloy that does not tarnish and is safe for daily wear. It is made of pure gold mixed with small amounts of other metals for strength making it extremely durable and resistant to tarnish or fading over time. Pure gold (24 karat) is soft, so it's blended with other metals like copper, silver, or zinc to increase strength and durability. These blends are called gold alloys, and they're categorized by karat (k) a measure of how much pure gold is in the mix.
Here’s a breakdown:
10K solid gold contains 41.7% pure gold. It’s the most durable and affordable option, making it great for everyday wear.
14K solid gold contains 58.5% pure gold. The most popular choice for fine jewelry in the U.S. due to its balance of rich color, durability, and value.
18K contains 75% pure gold. It has a warmer, more vibrant yellow tone and is often used in luxury or high-end pieces. Slightly softer, so better suited for occasional or mindful everyday wear.
Why we love it:
Because solid gold lasts a lifetime with proper care and doesn't tarnish like plated metals, it’s an excellent choice for heirloom quality, meaningful jewelry.
What is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is an ultra durable, corrosion resistant metal. Stainless steel does contain nickel so for those who are allergic, stainless still may not be suitable for you but that's what gold fill and sterling silver is for!
Gold plated stainless steel is coated through ion plating (PVD) a process much more durable than regular gold plating.
